✓ Proposition 416 is not a new tax

The M&O override is not a new tax. It is a continuation of local funding originally approved by Maricopa voters in 2016 and renewed in 2021.

The current 10% override provides approximately $7.8 million to MUSD’s annual operating budget. Without voter approval, that funding will begin phasing out in 2027–2028 and will be completely eliminated after the 2028–2029 school year.

✓ Proposition 416 keeps class sizes small

Override funding helps MUSD maintain its board-approved class size targets and retain the teachers and staff needed to meet those targets.

Since 2016, class sizes have been reduced significantly, particularly at the elementary level. Maintaining smaller classes gives teachers more opportunity to provide individualized instruction to students.

✓ Proposition 416 keeps RAM Academy

The override helps maintain RAM Academy, MUSD’s alternative high school graduation program that provides credit recovery and intervention for students who need a different path to graduation.

Without the override, RAM Academy would be eliminated.

✓ Proposition 416 continues investing in technology

Override funding gives MUSD the ability to continue investing in student and instructional technology.

If the override is not continued, the District’s capacity to make these investments would be reduced as the funding phases out.

✓ Keep local dollars under local control

The M&O override allows local voters to determine whether this funding continues to be invested in Maricopa schools.

Continuing the override keeps these dollars directed toward local priorities, including class sizes, student programs, and technology.

✓ We can trust the district to spend money wisely

MUSD operates within its approved budget limits each year and has funded school repair and renewal without raising taxes.

The District has also received more than 20 awards for fiscal responsibility, including the Government Finance Officers Association Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting. According to the Arizona Auditor General, MUSD also has one of the lowest administration costs among neighboring districts.
